ALFA’s MISSION

To reduce the stigma and impact of HIV, viral hepatitis, STIs and other communicable diseases through access to equitable prevention, education, and care services.

​​ALFA is the lead partner in providing comprehensive care for clients is the regional HIV medical clinic, Fairgrove Primary Health, a department of Catawba Valley Medical Center.

ALFA serves the Appalachian Mountains and foothills of rural Northwestern North Carolina. This includes Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Watauga and Wilkes counties.

ALFA (AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance) began in 1987 as a volunteer effort in Burke County and became a nonprofit in 1989.

Today, ALFA’s growing team provides HIV-related services including case management, prevention education, testing, counseling, harm reduction, and PrEP/PEP across the region.

ALFA’s Goals

  • Achieve early detection and care through HIV/STD counseling, testing and referral

  • Engage in targeted prevention efforts with persons who are at high risk for HIV infection and people living with HIV/AIDS to reduce secondary infections

  • Get individuals who are newly diagnosed as HIV positive into medical care quickly

  • Support clients in medical care​​
